During Union General Sherman's march to the sea the Confederate forces under General Johnson fell back rapidly, but stiffened their resolve to make a stand at Resaca, Georgia, on May 13 - 16, 1864 during which eight men earned Medals of Honor. In action against these rebel forces on May 15, Captain Paul Oliver, while acting as an aide along with Major Henry Tremain, became aware of a deadly situation when, in the confusion of the battle, Union forces under General Coburn began firing on the brigade of Union General Harrison. Major Tremain, who was attached to the staff of Major General Sickles who was visiting the forces at Resaca when this incident occurred, boldly rode down the front line of General Coburn's command, knocking down the muskets of the front rank with his sword and his hands. Captain Oliver also assisted in ending this deadly hail of "friendly fire" that otherwise would have proved disastrous. Both men earned Medals of Honor for their prompt and heroic actions. |
