In the period from April 26 to May 6, 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, in a battle that cost more than 30,000 casualties including the brilliant Confederate commander "Stonewall" Jackson. Twenty-four Union soldiers earned Medals of Honor in the one week period from April 30 to May 6. On the night of May 4 and 5, Major St. Clair Mulholland was in command of the picket line and held the enemy in check throughout the night to cover the retreat of the Army, earning the Medal of Honor for his heroism and leadership.
