In a single engagement near Columbus, Georgia on 16 April 1865, five members of the 4th Iowa Cavalry and two members of the 3d Iowa Cavalry captured battle flags of their opponents. Each of these seven men, all from the State of Iowa, received Medals of Honor. Corporal Morgan of Company A, 4th Iowa Cavalry was cited for entering the enemy's works, where he "contested" with the bearer of the enemy flag for its possession. |
|
Richard Morgan served for a time as a guard in the Fort Madison penitentiary, before returning to the New Market area of Page county to pursue a farming career. |
