On December 25, 1863, the U.S. Steam Gunboat Marblehead engaged the confederate batteries at John's Island near Legareville on the Stono River, South Carolina. Quartermaster James Miller was one of four members of the crew awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism in that action. Acting courageously under the fierce hostile fire, Quartermaster Miller behaved gallantly throughout the engagement which resulted in the enemy's withdrawal and abandonment of its arms. |
