Lieutenant Colonel Henry Merriam was one of fourteen soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in action against Confederate forces at Fort Blakely, Alabama, on April 9, 1865. He volunteered to attack the enemy's works in advance of orders and, upon permission being given, made a most gallant assault. |
