In all, a total of 64 Medals of Honor were earned in action at Petersburg, Virginia, in the period from March 25 to April 3, 1865, fifty-four of them on April 2 alone. Sergeant Charles Marquette was one of seventeen soldiers cited for their heroism as color bearers in this action. Although wounded, he was one of the first to plant the colors on the enemy's breastworks. |
