| At Farmville, Virginia, on April 7, 1865, Union forces were surprised and nearly overwhelmed by the Confederate forces. Captain William Ludgate was one of two commanding officers cited for his gallant leadership in this battle. With great courage Captain Ludgate rallied his men and advanced with a small detachment in order to save a bridge that was about to be fired on by the enemy. Sergeant John Galloway also earned the Medal of Honor in this battle. |
