Private Joseph Lonsway earned the Medal of Honor for personal heroism at Murfrees Station, Virginia, on October 16, 1864. When his detachment reached the banks of the Blackwater River, Private Lonsway voluntarily swam the river to get a large flat that could be used as a ferry in getting his command across the body of water. This crossing, successful in large measure because of the actions of Private Lonsway, resulted in his detachment taking position of the enemy's breastworks on the far shore. |
