Captain John Lonergan was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. As darkness fell on the evening of July 2, four guns of the 15th U.S. Artillery were captured by the Confederate forces. Major General Hancock found the 13th Vermont in reserve and ordered them to recapture the guns. Captain Lonergan, in command of Company A, was the first to reach and recapture the guns, along with two enemy artillery pieces. While returning to the Union lines, Captain Lonergan and his men came under fire from the nearby Codori House. Captain Lonergan ordered his men to temporarily leave the recaptured guns and follow him in an attack on the enemy force, personally opening the door and ordering the surrender of the Confederate soldiers inside the house. He returned to his lines with the six cannons and eighty-three rebel prisoners. |
