On August 3, 1864, Captain Henry Lawton led a charge of skirmishers against the enemy's rifle pits at Atlanta, Georgia. After capturing the works and placing his men around them, he then led a valiant repulse of two determined rebel attacks in the Confederates' unsuccessful efforts to retake the position.
Henry War Lawton was one of those rare Medal of Honor recipients to be killed in action subsequent to their Medal of Honor award. He was killed thirty-five years after his Civil War action while fighting in the Philippine Islands.
