On August 3, 1864, Captain Henry Lawton led a charge of skirmishers against the enemy's rifle pits at Atlanta, Georgia. After capturing the works and placing his men around them, he then led a valiant repulse of two determined rebel attacks in the Confederates' unsuccessful efforts to retake the position. |
| Henry War Lawton was one of those rare Medal of Honor recipients to be killed in action subsequent to their Medal of Honor award. He was killed thirty-five years after his Civil War action while fighting in the Philippine Islands. |
