On February 2, 1864, Confederate General Martin attacked Newport Barracks, North Carolina, which was defended by fewer than 750 Union soldiers with but a single gun. The 2,000-man rebel force with fourteen guns and 400 cavalrymen quickly pushed the Union forces back in a retreat across the river. First Lieutenants Erastus Jewett, Josiah Livingston, and Theodore Peck valiantly led parties in efforts to delay the charging rebels and burn the bridges, thereby stalling the enemy advance. All three officers earned Medals of Honor for their heroic actions that enabled most of the soldiers under siege at Newport Barracks to escape across the river, and then denied the advancing Confederates a convenient crossing to pursue them. |
