Sergeant Benjamin Jellison was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. Though his citation notes his actions on the last day of that battle, his first act of heroism on record came on the evening of July 2 when Sergeant Jellison, with his unit during a charge in support of the retreating 3d Corps, rescued the flag of his regiment after the color bearer was shot down. On the following day, as Pickett's charge surged up the western slope of Cemetery Ridge and over the stone wall, Sergeant Jellison's regiment was called in to support a countercharge and to close a hole in the Union line. During that action Sergeant Jellison captured the flag of the 57th Virginia Infantry (Confederate States of America), and assisted in the capture of many prisoners. |
