In action against Confederate forces at Fort Sedgwick, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, a color bearer fell after being struck by seven enemy bullets. Sergeant Charles Ilgenfritz, despite the danger he had just witnessed, immediately sprang forward and grasped the colors, planting them on the enemy's forts amid a murderous fire of grape, canister, and musketry from the enemy forces. |
