Lieutenant Colonel Henry Huidekoper was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the first day of that battle, Lieutenant Colonel Huidekoper was commanding three companies of the 105th Pennsylvania Infantry in fighting near the McPherson Farm, when they were faced with assault from the north by the 32d North Carolina (Confederate States of America). After firing two effective volleys into the enemy, Lieutenant Colonel Huidekoper led his men forward, waving his sword at the advance of his companies. As he did so, an enemy ball shattered his right arm. So severely wounded that his arm was later amputated, Lieutenant Colonel Huidekoper refused to seek first aid, but remained on the battlefield in command of his regiment. |
