Brigadier General Oliver Otis Howard was one of nine men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during a two-day engagement with Confederate forces at Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31 and June 1, 1862. During the heavy fighting of June 1, General Howard led the 61st New York infantry in a charge on enemy position, during which he was severely wounded twice, one injury so severe as to require amputation of his arm. |
