Landsman Martin Howard was one of four members of the crew of the U.S.S. Tacony awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the capture of Plymouth, North Carolina, on October 31, 1854. He was cited for carrying out his duties faithfully during the engagement where he distinguished himself by a display of coolness when he participated in landing and spiking a 9-inch gun while under a devastating fire from enemy musketry. Coxswain Patrick Colbert of the U.S.S. Commodore Hull also earned the Medal of Honor in this engagement. |
