During the bombardment of Fort Wagner, South Carolina, on July 14, 1863, First Sergeant Charles Holton was engaged with confederate forces on his mount in the midst of an Infantry charge. During the heavy combat he dismounted in order to capture the flag of the 44th Virginia Infantry (Confederate States of America). Also earning Medals of Honor at Fort Wagner were Sergeant William Carney and Private Joseph Hibson. |
