First Lieutenant James Hill used skillful and brave management of his resources to capture three of the Confederate pickets at Champion Hill, Mississippi, on May 16, 1863, earning the Medal of Honor for his heroism. Captain George Wilhelm also earned a Medal of Honor in this action. |
| A Baptist minister prior to the Civil War, after the war he returned to his home in Cascade, Iowa to pastor the local Baptist church. He was later transferred to the Worthington Church, however even during this period he continued to make his home in Cascade. |
