In a single engagement near Columbus, Georgia on 16 April 1865, five members of the 4th Iowa Cavalry and two members of the 3d Iowa Cavalry captured battle flags of their opponents. Each of these seven men, all from the State of Iowa, received Medals of Honor. John H. Hays, a private in Company F, 4th Iowa Cavalry was cited for capturing both the flag and flag bearer of Austin's Battery of the Confederate States of America. |
