Captain Smith Hastings was one of two officers who earned the Medal of Honor at Newby's Crossroads, Virginia, in action against Confederate Forces on July 24, 1863. Captain Hastings was in command of a squadron in rear guard of a cavalry division that was retiring before the advance of a corps of infantry. His position was attacked by the enemy and orders were given to abandon the guns of a section of field artillery with the rear guard that were in imminent danger of capture. Captain Hastings disregarded the orders and aided in repelling the attack and saving the guns. Also earning the Medal of Honor in this battle was First Lieutenant Carle Woodruff. |
