Prior to the first Battle of Bull Run in Virginia on July 21, 1861, only five soldiers and one sailor had earned Medals of Honor. In the Bull Run battle alone, eleven soldiers and Civilian Contract Surgeon Mary Walker earned Medals of Honor. In the engagement with Confederate Forces at Bull Run, Colonel John Hartranft earned the Medal of honor for his voluntary service in the Battle of Bull Run, which combat he could have avoided as his term of service expired on the day prior to the engagement. Instead of returning home, his duty completed, Colonel Hartranft remained to serve as an aid, and distinguished himself by rallying several regiments that had been thrown into confusion by the enemy fire. |
