Sergeant Ephraim Harrington was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on May 3, 1863. During this engagement he carried the colors to the top of the heights and almost to the muzzle of the enemy's guns.

In all, ten soldiers earned Medals of Honor in the May 3 battle at Fredericksburg.
