Seventeen men earned Medals of Honor for their heroism at Petersburg, Virginia, in the battle that raged from June 15 - 18, 1864. On June 16 the 133d Ohio Infantry Regiment was pushed back from its works. In the withdrawal it was noted that three companies of the regiment were missing, and Private Joseph Gregg volunteered to return to the former position to notify these companies to fall back. Upon reaching that former position, Private Gregg found the enemy already occupying the works and demanding his surrender. With daunting courage Private Gregg refused their demands and raced back to his command under a concentrated hail of enemy fire that pierced his hat and clothing. |
