Surgeon Gabriel Grant was one of nine men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during a two-day engagement with Confederate forces at Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31 and June 1, 1862. During the heavy fighting of June 1, Surgeon Gabriel Grant removed severely wounded officers and soldiers from the field of fire. Throughout these heroic action he repeated exposed himself to heavy enemy fire, but persisted in his efforts to save the wounded and inspired the other soldiers by his example of distinguished gallantry. |
