First Sergeant Edward Gilligan was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the first day of the battle, First Sergeant Gillian's regiment was ordered to attack Iverson's Brigade, which had just been repulsed in its own attack on the Union forces. First sergeant Gilligan lead his men in an assault on the 23d North Carolina (Confederate States of America) during which there was heavy hand-to-hand fighting. In that melee, First Sergeant Gilligan knocked down the Confederate color sergeant with the butt of his musket, enabling his captain to rush forward and capture the enemy flag. |
