As the battle lines were being drawn up at Bethesda Church, Virginia, on May 31, 1864, First Lieutenant George Gillespie braved the danger of enemy fire to voluntarily pass through their lines in efforts to carry an important communication to General Sheridan. Lieutenant Gillespie, in performance of this mission, was captured but managed to escape and continue on his errand. Confronted again by an enemy force and ordered to surrender, he valiantly raced away under a withering fire to deliver the important dispatch. |
