Thirty soldiers of the Union Army were awarded Medals of Honor for their heroism in battle against the Confederate forces during the September 29, 1864, battle at Chapin's Farm, Virginia. Private James Gardiner earned the Medal of Honor when he rushed ahead of his brigade in their charge on the enemy, attacking and shooting a rebel officer who was trying to rally the enemy forces on the parapet. Upon reaching the officer, Private Gardiner halted the Confederate leader's attempt to mount a resistance by running him through with his bayonet. |
