Sergeant Frederick Fuger was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. Sergeant Fuger's battery was in the center of the Union line next to Copse of Trees and firing double and triple canister into the advancing line of Brigadier General Armistead's Confederate forces. The rebel commander personally led his men over the stone wall and into the Union battery, where all of the Federal officers were quickly either killed or wounded. Sergeant Fuger immediately took command and ordered his cannoneers to right as Infantrymen while he continued to work the single remaining cannon. Under his leadership the battery held its position until Pickett's Charge was turned back. |
