On December 31, 1862 and the following day, Union forces engaged Confederate soldiers in a battle at Stone River Tennessee. First Lieutenant Henry Freeman was one of eight soldiers who was so conspicuous for his gallantry in this action that he was awarded the Medal of Honor. On December 31 Lieutenant Freeman voluntarily went to the front and picked up and carried to a place of safety, under a heavy fire from the enemy, an acting field officer who had been wounded, and was about to fall into enemy hands. |
