Second Lieutenant Frederick Fout was serving with the Indiana Light Artillery Battery near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, during an engagement with Confederate forces on September 15, 1862. After another officer had ordered one battery abandoned in the engagement, Lieutenant Fout voluntarily gathered the men of the battery together, led them in re-manning the guns, and commenced firing on the enemy forces until they surrendered. |
