Color Sergeant Benjamin Falls was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. Sergeant Falls was carrying the flag of his own regiment in action on the last day of that battle while engaged as part of Hancock's countercharge on Pickett's Division. During the furious fighting of that afternoon, Color Sergeant Falls wrestled the flag of an unidentified Confederate regiment away from its own color bearer, thereby capturing an enemy flag at the same time he bore the flag of his own regiment in his hands. |
