Musician Richard Enderlin was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. He was cited for his heroism over all three days of the battle. Though his 2d Brigade was not engaged in the fighting north of the town with the rest of the 11th Corps, his unit was called upon to provide and defend Cemetery Hill throughout the three days of combat. During this period, though assigned as a bugler, Musician Enderlin voluntarily shouldered a musket and joined his comrades in action. On the night of July 2 Musician Enderlin voluntarily crossed the enemy's lines under heavy fire to rescue a wounded comrade, Private George Nixon. Private Nixon was the grandfather of the man who became our president, Richard M. Nixon. Private Nixon subsequently died of his combat wounds at Gettysburg, and Musician Enderlin was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism throughout the battle. |
