The battle at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, proved to be a long and deadly struggle. On May 6, 1864 as the battle continued, Union soldiers on the front were heavily engaged by a superior Confederate force. Throughout the day Second Lieutenant James Drake held his skirmish line against repeated attack, despite the fact that he was well in advance of the Union lines. He continued to hold throughout the night, but was subsequently captured and became a Prisoner of War. |
