In the period from April 26 to May 6, 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, in a battle that cost more than 30,000 casualties including the brilliant Confederate commander "Stonewall" Jackson. Twenty-four Union soldiers earned Medals of Honor in the one week period from April 30 to May 6, half of them in action on May 2. On that date Captain Hubert Dilger, and artillery officer, fought his guns until the enemy were upon him, then with one gun hauled in by hand he formed the rear guard and kept the enemy at bay by the rapidity of his fire and was the last man in the retreat.
