Seventeen men earned Medals of Honor for their heroism at Petersburg, Virginia, in the battle that raged from June 15 - 18, 1864. On June 17 Captain William Dickey was one of thirteen heroes thus cited. Wounded by a piece of a shell in the battle at Petersburg, Captain Dickey refused to leave the field, but remained in command of his men. The following day he led them valiantly in an attack on the enemy's works. |
