In all, a total of 64 Medals of Honor were earned in action at Petersburg, Virginia, in the period from March 25 to April 3, 1865, fifty-four of them on April 2 alone. Second Lieutenant Josiah Curtis was one of seventeen soldiers cited for their heroism as color bearers in this action. After two color bearers had been shot down, Second Lieutenant Curtis seized the regimental colors and carried them gallantly throughout the charge. He was among the first to gain a foothold, with his flag, inside the enemy's works.
