When the Union forces made a sudden night attack upon Burnham's Confederate Brigade at Swift Creek, Virginia, on the night of May 9, 1864, the charge was met with great confusion. Without waiting for orders, Lieutenant Colonel John Coughlin valiantly led his regiment forward and interposed a line of battle between the advancing rebel force and the Union guns of Hunt's Battery, thereby repulsing their attack and saving the artillery from falling into the enemy's hands. |
