Assistant Surgeon Joseph Corson was one of four soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor for heroic actions in combat against Confederate forces at Bristoe Station, Virginia, on October 14, 1863. During the heavy fighting, with one unidentified companion, Assistant Surgeon Corson returned in the face of the enemy's heavy artillery fire and removed to a place of safety a severely wounded soldier who had been left behind as the regiment fell back. |
