Landsman Thomas Corcoran was one of six crewmen of the U.S.S. Cincinnati who earned the Medal of Honor in an engagement at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on May 27, 1863. With his crewmen, Landsman Corcoran fought his ship under a heavy fire until it was so full of holes from enemy fire that it could not remain afloat. Landsman Corcoran served bravely during this action and was conspicuously cool under the fire of the enemy, never ceasing to fight until this proud ship went down, "her colors nailed to the mast." |
