From dawn to dusk on September 17, 1862, General Lee's outnumbered Confederate forces fought desperately against the Union Army under General George McClellan at Antietam, Maryland in one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War. More than 20,000 men were killed in the day-long fight, and twenty Union soldiers served with such courage and distinction that they were awarded the Medal of Honor. Among these heroes was Corporal Benjamin Child who was wounded and taken to the rear insensible. When partially recovered he insisted on returning to the battery and resumed command of his piece, remaining there until the close of the battle.
