Major Charles Capehart was in command of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry at Monterey Mountain, Pennsylvania, not far from where the Gettysburg battle was fought on July 1 - 3, 1863. Near midnight on the night of July 4 a Confederate wagon train was fleeing the area in a pouring rain when Major Capehart bravely led his troopers down the mountainside to engage the retreating Confederates. Because of this prompt and daring action many of the enemy's wagons were captured and destroyed, and many prisoners were taken. Charles Capehart's brother, Henry Capehart, also earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War. |
