During Union General Sherman's march to the sea the Confederate forces under General Johnson fell back rapidly, but stiffened their resolve to make a stand at Resaca, Georgia, on May 13 - 16, 1864 during which eight men earned Medals of Honor. In action against these rebel forces on May 15, Sergeant James Burns noted that the onslaught of Confederate forces imperiled the colors. Under a heavy fire, he rallied a few men in support of the colors and bore them to safety. During this action one of his comrades fell on the battlefield, severely wounded. Sergeant Burns, heedless of the danger, went back a hundred yards in the face of the enemy's fire and carried the wounded man from the field. |
