On May 24, 1861 Union troops were marching through Alexandria, Virginia when they passed a hotel from which a Confederate Flag was flying. Colonel Ephraim Ellsworth climbed to the roof and removed the flag. Appearing at the edge of the roof, he was shot and killed. Private Brownell shot and killed the Confederate assassin. Initially denied his request for the Medal of Honor in this, the first MOH action of the Civil War, Edwin Brownell enlisted the aid of a Congressman to gain eventual approval of his award. |
