In the period from April 26 to May 6, 1863, Union and Confederate forces clashed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, in a battle that cost more than 30,000 casualties including the brilliant Confederate commander "Stonewall" Jackson. Twenty-four Union soldiers earned Medals of Honor in the one week period from April 30 to May 6. On May 3 Sergeant Thomas Bradley earned the Medal of Honor when he volunteered in response to a call and alone, in the face of a heavy fire of musketry and canister, went and procured ammunition for the use of his comrades. Mr. Bradley served in the New York State Assembly in 1876 and from 1903 - 1913 served as US Representative from New York's 20th District. |
