Lieutenant Colonel Henry Boynton was one of twenty men cited for personal valor in the fighting in and around Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 24 & 25, 1863. On November 25 in action at Missionary Ridge where fifteen men earned Medals of Honor, Lieutenant Colonel Boynton and his men deployed along the front and advanced a mile against heavy enemy opposition. Upon reaching the enemy's works Lieutenant Colonel Boynton led his mean over the fortifications, where they caught the enemy cannoneers still loading their pieces and killed or drove all of them away in fierce hand-to-hand combat. In this action, while still valiantly leading his men, Lieutenant Colonel Boynton was severely wounded. |
