Eighteen soldiers were awarded Medals of Honor for their heroism during the heavy fighting at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13, 1862. In action against the Confederate forces, Colonel Zenas Bliss was in command of a regiment which had never before seen combat action, and which had been ordered to lie down to protect itself from enemy fire. To encourage his regiment, Colonel Bliss rose to his feet, advanced in the front of the line, and fired several shots at the enemy at short range, all while being fully exposed to the enemy's fire. Graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1854 |
