Captain William Black was one of four men cited for heroism in action against rebel forces at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, on March 7, 1862. Single-handedly, Captain Black confronted the enemy, firing a rifle at them and thus checking their advance within 100 yards of the lines. William Black's brother, John C. Black, also earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War. |
