After two regiments of Union forces had been repulsed and driven down the hill during an engagement with Confederate forces at Prairie Grove, Arkansas, on December 7, 1862, Lieutenant Colonel John Black charged the enemy position at the head of his regiment. Though he was severely wounded in this action, Lieutenant Colonel Black and his soldiers successfully captured an enemy battery. John Charles Black was a 1888 Democratic nominee for Vice President and served as a US Representative at-large for Illinois from 1893 - 95. He was the U.S. District Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 1895 - 99. His brother, William P. Black, also earned the Medal of Honor in the Civil War. |
