In May 1863 after assuming command of the Union Army, General Grant launched his offensive against Confederate General Robert E. Lee, marching towards Richmond, Virginia. By May 5 most of Grant's army had crossed the Rapidan River, where for three days they engaged the Confederate forces in the opening battles of the "Wilderness Campaign". On the second day of that battle when the Union forces were repulsed during a charge on the enemy's positions and forced to give way, Captain Henry Bingham rallied his men and then led them valiantly back into the battle. Henry Bingham was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention from Pennsylvania in 1872, 1876, 1884, 1888, 1892, 1896, and 1900. In 1879 he was elected to the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 1st District where he served 33 years through 17 successive Congresses from 1879 until his death in 1912. Bingham County Idaho is named for Henry Harrison Bingham. |
