In action against Confederate forces at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on November 23, 1863, the Union armies charged against well-defended, fortified positions that rained effective and deadly fire on their ranks, inflicting numerous casualties and demoralizing the attacking Federal troops. Although suffering severe wounds himself, Colonel Henry Barnum refused to retire, gallantly continuing to lead his regiment and inciting his men to greater action by his words and example of valor until he was severely wounded a second time. First Lieutenant John Toffey also earned a Medal of Honor for his own valiant leadership in this battle. |
